Nobody’s perfect – least of all stressed out students during finals – which is why you may need some extra help from time to time, whether it’s in the form of extra lessons, book summaries, or an inspirational video to help you understand a tricky concept. Check out the list of apps below for an educational boost when you need it.
- MasterPass System
If you haven’t heard of this local gem, it’s about time you feast your eyes on the time- and money-saving student staple. The MasterPass System, created by The Student Hub, offers comprehensive textbook summaries and corresponding quizzes for major South African college and university courses, allowing students to save the money they would have spent on textbooks, and spare themselves the frustration of summarising hundreds of pages by hand. The MasterPass System also comes with a progress tracker, test schedule and motivational coach.
- Coursera & Khan Academy
Similar to the MasterPass System, but not based on local curricula, is Coursera, an educational app which offers over a thousand free tertiary courses across a wide variety of subjects developed by the best institutions in the world. The app features lecture videos, coursework, projects and quizzes, and even allows students to obtain qualifications.
Khan Academy is a rival programme which offers equally brilliant courses via a beautifully designed user interface. Check out both systems and see which one works best for you.
SlideShare is simply a collection of over fifteen million user-generated presentations, infographics and videos on almost any topic imaginable. Missed a lecture, or struggling to understand a particular concept? There’s almost certainly a presentation on the exact subject waiting to be discovered in the depths of SlideShare, and you don’t even need to register or subscribe.
StudyBlue is like SlideShare on Ritalin. Cited as the leading crowdsourced learning platform, StudyBlue offers user-generated summaries, notes, study guides and other learning aids. It’s free, it’s easy, and it’s popular with students of every level of study around the world.
Okay, this is a bit of a no-brainer, but just think about how easy and enjoyable learning is when it’s integrated into an entertaining video. Brilliant educational channels include SciShow, AsapScience, and Vi Hart – not to mention TED Talks to explain tough concepts and get you motivated.
Let us know which of these educational apps you like best, or if we left out your favourite. Here’s to a successful semester.
